For the October Bank Holiday Weekend, the Warrior Martial Arts Studio at the F1 Fitness Centre, Clonakilty, was the venue for a 2-day Reality-Based Self Defence Seminar. The seminar, which covered realistic street confrontations including defences against knives and defences from the ground, was delivered by instructors of Stringer Ju Ka Do UK.

Day 1 consisted of a confined session for instructors, while day 2 was open to both instructors and students. The Warrior Tae Kwon Do students and instructors were guided through the thorough and practical self defence drills by instructors Gary Stringer 8th dan, Kevin Stringer 5th dan and Paul Tarbuck 3rd dan, as well as Roger Adams - owner of F1 Fitness Centre and long-time friend and student of Mr Stringer.

All attendees thoroughly enjoyed the experience, not only due to the effectiveness of the techniques, but also the friendly and fun atmosphere which the instructors promoted throughout. Plans are already being made by Warrior Tae Kwon Do to arrange a repeat visit by the Ju Ka Do instructors.

On Saturday August 23rd, a small number of Warrior Tae Kwon Do members attended a seminar at Mr Paul O'Leary's Jung Shin Mu Do dojang in The Glen, Cork.

The seminar, taught by Mr Matthew Sylvester of Practical Martial Arts, concentrated on real-life applications of the techniques we learn in our Tae Kwon Do patterns. During the three-hour course, participants were instructed in countless and often surprising uses for a wide range of techniques.

Mr Sylvester, a UK-based instructor, is a graded practitioner of Taekwondo, Ao Denkou Jitsu, Freestyle Kempo, Reality Based Self Defence, Practical Self Defence, and FAST. He is also Features Editor and regular columnist for the UKs leading martial arts magazine Combat. Matthew has experience of the martial arts in a sporting and practical manner and has served in the TA (OTC), the Special Constables, has worked Close Protection and is currently a Door Supervisor.

The seminar, which was not only informative, but highly entertaining, was thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part. Mr Sylvester has already offered to return to Ireland to conduct further seminars and we all look forward to seeing him again in the near future.

Over the weekend of April 26th and 27th, Cork's Neptune Stadium played host to the European Tae Kwon Do Championships. The event, being hosted by Tae Kwon Do International Ireland, was one of the biggest on record and attracted in excess of 700 competitors from all corners of the continent, including a typically strong Irish squad. The Irish competed bravely against some of the best practitioners in Europe and, as is usually the case in Tae Kwon Do tournaments, came away with a sizeable haul of awards from all divisions.
